Sophos is aware of a vulnerability in the 3rd party component Exim that is used in Sophos XG Firewall, when a customer has enabled email protection. This vulnerability only applies if a customer has enabled email protection and recipient verification is disabled. This article describes the recommended steps to secure the XG Firewall if customers are using the email protection functionality.
For reference, the default configuration of XG Firewall is that all services operate on unique ports. The attack used a previously unknown pre-auth SQL injection vulnerability to gain access to exposed XG devices. It was designed to exfiltrate XG Firewall-resident data.
